What is an RSS Feed?
RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a type of file formatted to describe items of news so that they can be shared across the web. An RSS news feed allows you to get the latest news without having to visit a particular website.
News (or "feed") readers "subscribe" to news feeds, which means they download lists of stories at an interval that you specify (every 30 minutes, for example), and present them to you in your news reader.
Advantages of using a news reader include:
- You can subscribe and unsubscribe at any time and the effect is immediate.
- You do not need to give out your e-mail address or register with the site.
- You can read articles on your own schedule.
How to Subscribe
In order to subscribe to a RSS news feed, you will need a news reader. Performing a search for "RSS Feed Readers" in any major online search engine will produce lots of options — many of which are free or at little cost. Some types of feed readers can be downloaded and installed on your computer, or you can opt for a web-based reader, such as what is available on an iGoogle or a MyYahoo! page. Also, the Microsoft Internet Explorer 7+ and Firefox 2.0 & 3.0 web browsers have the capability of displaying and subscribing to news feeds.
Once you've obtained a feed reader, subscribing to an RSS feed is simple. The available NYSED news feeds are listed above. Simply copy the URL/shortcut Web "address" of the RSS feed that corresponds to the topic that interests you. Then paste the URL into your feed reader. The software will then automatically retrieve and display the latest information.
