2012–2014 Commissioner's Schools – Dissemination Grant

Gorham Middlesex Central School District (Marcus Whitman)

District Overview

The Gorham Middlesex Central School District is located in Yates and Ontario counties in Rushville, New York.  The district is comprised of four schools – PreK-2, elementary (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). The district was identified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as having one of the highest performing high schools in New York State.  The Gorham Middlesex CSD proposes to disseminate its instructional practices aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), in particular its target-driven teaching (TDI) model for assessment and data-driven instruction.

District-Identified Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement

The Gorham Middlesex CSD attributes increases in student achievement to its commitment to, and use of, target-driven teaching (TDT), which emphasizes teachers’ responsibility for the success of all students. The district believes that its model of target-driven teaching (TDT) can be replicated in low performing schools. The specific strategies of TDT include:

  1. Early identification of student underperformance in a specific area accompanied by early intervention;
  2. Connections to student support and wrap-around services for students with social, emotional, and behavioral issues;
  3. Frequent communications and connections with parents; and
  4. Targeted, ongoing professional development for teachers to ensure fidelity of practices.

Proposed Outcomes
As a Dissemination Grant School, the Gorham Middlesex CSD intends to share and disseminate the practice of building capacity to implement a Data-to drive instructional decisions.  As the result of partnership through this grant, the Carle Place UFSD suggests a replication school should expect:

  1. Access to printed guiding resources for target-driven teaching (TDT);
  2. Guided support and technical assistance through peer coaching and mentoring;
  3. The development of a cadre of teacher-leaders in the Replication Grant School, to implement and build new capacity to implement TDT.

Dissemination Plan

The Gorham Middlesex CSD will provide the following to each Replication Grant School with which it has partnered:

  1. One two-day initial training on the basics of TDT, data analysis, target selection and related teaching strategies;
  2. Parallel teacher to teacher partnerships between the Replication Grant School and the Gorham Middlesex teachers;
  3. On-site visits to the Replication Grant School (approximately 50 in the first year) and follow-up telephone conversations, email and video conferencing as needed for coaching and support.
  4. Ongoing follow-up support and data-analysis assistance.
